F. Scott Fitzgerald,

F. Scott Fitzgerald, Büyük-büyük amcası Amerikan istiklâl marşının güftesini yazan Francis Scott Key olan, Minnestoa eya­letinin St. Paul şehrinde, irlandalı ve ingiliz asıllı Katolik kilise­sinin yönettiği bir mektepte vasat bir şekilde tamamladıktan sonra, 1913'te Princeton Üniversitesi'ne gitti. Fakat dersleri dı­şında başka faaliyetler yürüttüğünden, notları yine hiç de iyi de­ğildi. Üniversitede, piyesler yazdı, üniversite edebî mecmuaları için şiir ve hikâyeler yazdı, derslerini ihmal etti. Tam zamanında gelen bir hastalık ve ardından askere alınması sayesinde, üniver­siteden atılmaktan kurtuldu. Fakat Fitzgerald, Princeton'a olan sevgisini hayatı boyunca devam ettirdi.
Teğmen Fitzgerald, hiç bir zaman Amerika dışına gönderil­medi. Çok vakti, fakat çok az parası bulunan Fitzgerald, ilk ro­manını yazdı, ve sonraları, hayatını en güçlü bir şekilde etkile­yecek Zelda Sayre adındaki kıza kur yaptı. Ancak, This Side of Paradise Cennetin Bu Tarafındakiler adlı romanı yayınlandık­tan sonradır ki (1920), Zelda, sefaleti artık geride bırakmış, ni­şanlısı ile evlenmeye razı oldu. Kitap, Fitzgerald'ı, Jaz Çağının sesi olarak yerleştirdi ve yirmi dört yaşında, peşinde koştuğu servet ve şöhrete kavuşturdu. Fitzgerald ve Zelda, yıllarca, Ame­rika dışında, bilhassa Paris'te ve Fransız Riviyera'sında, göz ka­maştırıcı bir şekilde yaşadılar ve her zaman ümitsizcesine, ge­lirlerinden fazla para harcadılar. Fitzgerald'ın . küçük hikâyele­rinden çoğu, masrafını karşılamak için yazılan piyasa kitapları idiler. Bunlardan bazıları The Diamond as Big as the Ritz ve Babylon Revisited, maamafih, asrın en iyi hikâyeleri arasın­dadır ve kendisinin en iyi romanları ile de mukayese edilebilir. 1927'den itibaren, Zelda'nın sıhhati bozuldu ve Fitzgerald çok daha fazla kendisini içkiye verdi. 1930'ların ortalarında, artık bir alkolik olmuştu. Verimi düştü, borçları arttı ve şöhreti söndü. Son yıllarını dramatik bir şekilde anlattığı kitabı, The Crack Up (1945), Fitzgerald'ın, cesaretini olduğu kadar ümitsizliğini de gösteriyor. Zelda bir hastaneye kaldırıldı (kadın, Fitzgerald'ın ölümünden bir kaç sene sonra bir yangında öldü) ve Fitzgerald, Hollywood için senaryo yazmak suretiyle kızı Scottie'ye baktı. Fakat makine kendisini yitirmişti. Ve Fitzgerald, 44 yaşında iken Los Angeles'te kalp sektesinden öldü. Tamamlanmamış son ro­manında (The Last Tycoon), Fitzgerald, başından geçen felâket­lere rağmen, hakikî bir sanatkârın, haysiyet ve nüfuz edici gö­rüşünü muhafaza ettiğini gösteriyor.

Thackeray BIography of WIllIam Makepeace William Thackeray was born in Calcutta, India. His father, Richmond Thackeray, was a secretary to the board of revenue in the British East India Company. His mother, Anne Becher, sent him to England for his education when his father died in 1815. He eventually attended the Charterhouse School, which he despised and later parodied as "Slaughterhouse" in his fiction. It was here that his first writing appeared, in the publications The Snob and The Gownsman . His matriculation to Trinity College was delayed by illness, and he dropped out in 1830. Over the next six years, Thackeray led a scattered and irresponsible life. He traveled all over Europe and met Goethe in Weimar. When he returned to England he began to study law, but soon abandoned the field.
